S. ADVERTS FOR SOLICITORS
Do keep your message simple. It needs to be clear and relevant. But there’s good simple and there’s bad simple. Remember you cannot bore people into buying your product or service. This is no more relevant than in solicitors advertising. Don’t cram your ad full of legalese. Legal ads must have something else that makes them clever, unexpected, and relevant to the service and its target audience. Try to make your audience smile so it disarms them. Making then laugh really disarms them. This can be done very tongue in cheek, even though as in the Superman advert above we are advertising serious injury. Try to inform them with something they didn’t know. Aim to provoke a reaction, an emotional response, better still an interaction to make your prospect think.

Do consider using the BIG 3.
The BIG 3 are the three elements that will appeal to all socio-economic groups in advertising without the risk of being overly offensive to any particular market segment. They are namely the use of:
1. Humour, 2. Children and 3. Animals. Funny how all these elements appear in the TV ads opposite.

Don’t put a map of your location in the advert, unless you are a new store opening at a new location. This one used to annoy me a lot, especially in directory advertising. Firstly it takes up too much expensive space and secondly if you are in the telephone book you obviously cover all those areas. Simply ensure your post code is in the advert and people will find you through Google.

Don’t reveal, imply ... use people’s imagination. People aren’t stupid. You don’t always need to explain or even show every part of your idea to them. Leaving a bit for the consumer to figure out will engage them with your idea. That’s why imagination is perhaps the most powerful tool of all. So try not to show all your cards. Give them just enough information to be able to “fill in the gaps” or put another way, don’t reveal, imply. This is the same principle behind the popular expression “Too much information” when someone gives an unsubtle or over detailed explanation. Look at the Grundy adverts above for example. The animals draw you in and then it hits you ... it’s all about size which is reinforced with the visual metaphor of the elephant in the skip.

Don’t be afraid to use the same idea over and over again, because if an idea works you have hit gold and at least will know which half of your advertising works and which doesn’t. You will notice throughout this site some ideas are very similar, that’s because we discovered that if it works for one client in one particular industry it may work for another, in a different industry ... and often it does.

Your target market is defined by many things, including: Age, Income, Education, Marital/Family Status, Occupation, Behaviour, Tastes and Attitudes (relating to product and market) Hobbies. Think about the audience’s relationship with the actual product. Ask why, when, where and how often they use it. Or if they’ve yet to use it or stopped using it find out why.

It’s hard enough to create something that clearly communicates one benefit in a short time, let alone two or three. It’s just too much for the reader to take in. Ultimately, it weakens the advertising message, the client and its brand.
Therefore, whether explicitly or implicitly, always try to tell the consumer something about the product.

I’ve only three regrets in life. Should have had more kids. Should have stayed with my mum the night before she passed away. Should have made some TV commercials. Because the majority of our clients are SME’s we’ve not had any clients with the luxury of a TV budget to promote their brand. The majority of TV commercials have half a minute to get their story across in sixty words, that’s two words a second! Hence the visual metaphor in TV ads is king. That’s why we just love the Hamlet, VW, Coke & Pepsi adverts ... hardly a word is spoken. I’ve attached our top ten TV adverts from the last 30 years since our conception. You’ll notice one fundamental theme running through all of them ... humour. Enjoy.

Don’t use too many exclamation marks to try and grab attention!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One is sufficient!Quotation marks, italic type, bold type and underlining are other ways to add interest, but be careful not to use them too much, or you'll end up with a mass of words that look "spotty" and takes away from the "quality" feel of your work. Don't be misled into thinking that you need a huge company name or logo to sign off. Provided it's where it should be, and has space around it, the customer will know who's talking to him. Get copies of the newspaper or magazine in which your advertisement is to appear and look at an advertisement the same size as yours. Think of your headline first and then the picture you're going to use. Remember, one picture is better than several. Concentrate on reducing your headline. Look at the headlines in the ads above, Start Here! Soccer, Fun, Pass etc just leap off the page.
Do monitor your advertising. I’ve known clients who’ve wasted thousands of pounds on unmonitored adverts booked at the last minute. Consider this; if you took a member of staff on for £10,000 you’d want to know that he’d be producing results and not turning up late or going home early or swanning off to the chippy or pub for long lunch breaks but it’s amazing how many firms simply don’t monitor their advertising which costs them more than £10,000.
Do try and display some before and after pictures in your ads if space allows, particularly so if you’re a builder, cosmetic surgeon, carpet cleaner, keep fit trainer etc. And especially if you’re a graphic designer as these examples below.
BLACK & WHITE LOGOS
Since leaving college I’ve always initially designed in black and white. Maybe this is because I’m from the generation where World War 2 was filmed in black and white, but more often that not it was the limitations of the media and client’s budget. Often when presenting logos in different colour ways clients (especially at board level or to committee’s) an initial mono version helps to sell the concept better than jumping in with a colour version, because colour is emotive. People tend to read colours differently based on their subjective perceptions of life.

BLACK & WHITE ADVERTS
Do consider booking a mono advert. Not only will it save you money, but if designed right will make you considerable bucks. Take these local press and Yellow Pages advert examples below. Advances in print technology has mean’t that the majority of advertisers are opting for full colour. Stick with a well designed mono advert and you’ll also be able to go larger or in more sections thus increasing your coverage and potential response rate. And it’s funny how well designed black and white ads simply leap off the page when appearing amongst a sea of mediocre full colour ones. Have a look in your local newspaper or telephone directory and see how many ads look the same, without originality or real impact. The space costs the same whether you use it effectively or not. Our mission is to make your ads make money; not in selling advertising space. Remember this, the most expensive ads of all are the ones that don't work.
TEMPLATE versus ORIGINAL
Do not even consider using foreign template advert designs.
90% of template advert websites are set up by printers at the expense of real designers. You’re paying for the print, not the design. Few, if any, give advice on marketing. These sites contain work of tedious mediocrity and are full of flaccid, bland and insipid designs, devoid of any bespoke imagination or visual flair. Most importantly they are not targeted, they are simply computer generated visual goo!
People that use these sites come from the same stable as those that purchase trainers at the expense of an impoverished Asian workforce. How can an Asian understand the colloquialisms of the British market and visa versa?
Remember, for an advert to work it must be original and as simple as a stop sign. Original imagery and ideas are the currency of success, they differentiate you from the competition. Just like the two adverts below, especially The Body Beautiful example which caused quite a stir within the sedate caravan market resulting in a fully booked workshop.
CATALOGUES
OK, so we haven’t got the Argos account ... yet! But we’ve certainly done quite a few catalogues over the past 30 years, though this did decline somewhat during the dot.com boom and bust years at the turn of the century. Catalogues are a vital sales tool, especially at trade shows or exhibitions. In the early days of the internet boom companies became very arrogant (especially car and car parts manufacturers), expecting potential customers to print off their catalogues and brochures via their websites ... have you seen the cost of ink for inkjet printers? It’s more expensive than champagne and that’s a fact!

Don’t become a busy fool! We fully appreciate the stresses and frustrations that go with running your business. Most days you might have a list with one hundred and one things to do but rarely get past twenty! Unfortunately, your marketing strategy may be way down the list.
