VITAL DO’S & DON’TS FOR MAGAZINE, NEWSPAPER & TELEPHONE DIRECTORY ADVERTISING
Do take more time designing your advert than booking the space. It’s the easiest thing in the world to book advertising space, but getting your advert right is what really matters. The universal problem with advertising is that in almost all cases it is rarely the media that is the problem, it’s the message.
A. ADVERTS FOR ACCOUNTANTS
Do seriously consider a smaller advert! Sounds crazy? But not if your advert is designed right. Smaller adverts afford the visual communicator the opportunity to try approaches that wouldn’t be as effective in a large advert. A series of small ads for instance instead of one full page, peppered throughout let’s say the very competitive plumbers section of Yellow Pages will capture the readers attention. Yes, that’s all very well I hear you say but I need to get to the front of the section. To get to the front of the section Yellow Pages advise to put 6 A’s in front of your company name. But if they are advising everyone how can your advert guarantee to appear at the front of the section? This is madness. In fact, the 6 A’s positioning system was featured on a recent edition of the Graham Norton Show. Graham phoned a company from the Yellow Pages and asked whether that was AAAAAA Plumbing Services. “Yes it is.” came the reply. To which Graham Norton replied “Oh I’m awfully sorry, I was looking for AAA Plumbing Services.” Funny! But even more of a concern is the number of companies featured on consumer protection programs such as Watch Dog and Rogue Traders with company names that start with A1 ... so avoid it like the plague. If you want to get to the front of a section go in Thomson Local where you are guaranteed to get to the front if you’ve booked the largest advert. Simple really.
We hope you enjoy the simplicity of this site. It’s just seven, simple and easy to navigate pages crammed full of ideas and advice on how to get the best from your advertising and marketing.
Located in The Peak District, England, The Artworks is an established design studio created in 1983. We’ve been creative ever since! Though the majority of our clients are UK based we have a significant number of international clients throughout Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
We have over 30 years experience in designing effective adverts for national & regional newspapers, magazines, websites and all UK telephone directories. In fact we estimate that we have produced close to thirty thousand adverts since our conception.
Our award winning design service is used by small enterprises, large blue chip companies and advertising sales personnel from all the major publishing companies. Our goal in life is quite simply to produce adverts that get a better response. Check what your competition is doing, then take steps to do something more creative and dramatic with ad designs by the Artworks.
As you may well appreciate the cost of producing quality finished artwork for a directory, newspaper or magazine may sometimes dissuade you from undertaking an essential part of your marketing operation. If you have found this to be the case then do not hesitate to contact us.
For example we can produce for you a quality 60mm x 64mm advert like the 15 samples below from only £95.
This all inclusive fee includes a free design service ... subject to availability.
For other sizes and prices please call Mike on 01663 745070 for an advert that is produced quickly, is economical and is full of impact. Alternatively please email Mike at mike.greensmith@btconnect.com
A. ADVERTS FOR ALARM COMPANIES, AUCTIONEERS, ACCIDENT AND PERSONAL INJURY SOLICITORS
Do also consider going at the back of a competitive section. If your section in Yellow Pages is competitive with lots of companies using the 6 A’s positioning system, simply book two small ads in the same section. One ad with 6 A’s and another with 6 Z’s. With your 6 Z’s advert use the headline “It’s true. The best is always saved until last!”
In a hurry?
Don't press the
panic button.
Press the phone button!
B. ADVERTS FOR BATHROOMS, HOT TUBS AND BEDS
Don’t concentrate too much on the features of your product or service, highlight instead the benefits to your target audience. By all means try and list as many of the features as possible as people are looking for information, but most importantly if you are a locksmith for example use a headline such as “WE’LL FIX IT NOW!”
B. ADVERTS FOR BIKE SHOPS, BUILDERS AND BOUNCY CASTLES
C. ADVERTS FOR COURIERS, CONCRETE, CCTV & CARPET CLEANERS
Do use unusual images. In directory advertising you are right up against your competition. If you are a conservatory company for example don’t use a headline saying “CONSERVATORIES” with a large picture of a conservatory because you are in the conservatories section anyway and you’ve just wasted a third of the costly space of your ad. Instead of a picture of a conservatory simply use a picture of a goldfish bowl with an oversize goldfish in it!
C. ADVERTS FOR CONSERVATORIES & DOUBLE GLAZING, CONSTRUCTION, CHIMNEY SWEEP AND CARAVAN MOVERS
D. ADVERTS FOR DEBT ADVISERS, DIY STORE, DISCOS, DENTISTS (AND CARAVANS)
D. ADVERTS FOR DRY CLEANERS, DRIVING SCHOOLS, DECORATORS, DIY, DRYING EQUIPMENT, DOOR REPAIRS, DEBT COLLECTION, DRAINS & DAMP PROOFING
E. ADVERTS FOR EXHAUSTS, ELECTRICIANS & EMPLOYMENT BUREAU
F. ADVERTS FOR FERTILITY CLINIC, FLORISTS, FORK LIFT TRUCKS & EXCAVATORS
G. ADVERTS FOR GLASS MERCHANTS, GARDEN CENTRES & GARAGES

Do make the next steps you would like the consumer to take incredibly obvious and as easy as possible in your ad. Make it clear how they can obtain what you are selling, and give them some motivation to do it quickly. Limited offers are a great way of stimulating short term interest. Once the potential customer makes the next move they have entered your purchase arena.

C. ADVERTS FOR CARAVANS AND CAR SHIPPING AGENTS
Don’t put a picture of your premises in the ad, unless your premises are up for sale. You are not selling the shop, you are trying to sell what’s inside your shop. But if you insist, take a picture with your staff lined up outside the premises to give the impression that it’s a local, established family orientated business.

EXHIBITION POP UP STANDS
“A company that in the 1980‘s and 1990‘s ran on chaos in the morning, fear of looming deadlines in the afternoon and Carlsberg Special Brews in the evening (well, early afternoon actually for some) ... but we never missed a deadline, and in all of 17 years working with Mike he taught me one vital thing - I learned “how not to design.” Mike Greensmith is a true creative genius. Call Mike and he’ll no doubt give you a tongue-firmly-in-cheek, witty résumé, about our award winning radio scripts written with the assistance of Carlsbergs!”
Malc Cherry - GRAPHIC DESIGNER (Retired)
Sometimes trying to state the bleedin’ obvious to people is like pulling teeth.
Sorry for swearing but I’m only fluent in one language ... design. Too many people think that just because they buy a Mac they can call themselves graphic designers. They are suffering from delusions of design adequacy. You have to learn how to draw and design first. It takes years of creative experience and challenges. The computer won’t do it for you.
We have become lost in the latest technological advances in software, so much so that many have become design-lazy! I am not a great fan of the new global design economy. It seems all around me bankers and venture capitalists are coming up with new fangled business models, “weapons of mass financial deception” that are going to make us all millionaires. Everyone except the creative folks. The creative types in advertising and design, the ones who come up with the big ideas that give real value to products and services, are being ridiculously shortchanged. They are being treated like burger flippers at McDonalds because these new-economy types are delirious with greed. They are naive about marketing, yet at the same time so arrogant about it. I hear things like “Forget about your unique idea, I want my click-through rates increased five fold, and if you can’t do it in less time and for less money I will find someone else who will!” Well, I am hopeful that this amateur hour of economies being run by corporate spivs and “delay and pray” politicians who speak with forked tongues is over. With the recent global fraud on the financial markets reaching its nemesis the hype appears to be over, and when many of these “googlingprintingdot.commies” as I like to call them, are bankrupt or in jail for tax evasion and conning hard working taxpayers, we will be able to get to the business of maturing the new economy. Of course, the best of the breed internet companies who don’t cut their prices to the bone at the expense of designers but have good business models with good business plans will prosper and continue to grow by using smart advertising and powerful design as opposed to cheap pedestrian template artwork. This is where we come in. And we can all get back to what we do best.
I see it already happening. Internet types are quickly realising that your electronic customer-relationship marketing needs to offer a value beyond product and service. Beyond all the databases and invasive email programs, a marketer still needs to offer a brand personality that people can emotionally invest in. And only great creative types can deliver that. My intention here is not to disrespect new media folks or even venture capitalists and politicians. It is merely to give some respect back to the creative people, the creative work, and the creative process that has been discounted in the post boom economy delirium.
Creative people don’t look for the next opportunity. The one we have in our hands now is the opportunity. We just have to look at it differently. In the words of Apple, “Think different” to create the opportunity. As designers we are always waiting for the perfect brief from the perfect client.
It almost never happens.
In the early days of my career I was often working on a job or project and saying “This is boring, let’s just deal with it and get it over with. We’ll make the next one good” But whatever is on your desk right now, that’s the one. Make it the best you possibly can. It may not be great, but at least you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you did the best you possibly could, and you may learn something from it. And you’re always free to do an alternative that does satisfy your creative standards. Good briefs don’t just come along. Successful solutions are often made by people rebelling against bad briefs.
Phew, that was a nice little rant! Better stop now as I’m running out of room.
MIKE’S COLUMN
Just a little rant from
Mike @ The Artworks
(AKA Chief Crazy Horse)
Do consider an exhibition pop up stand to promote your product or service virtually anywhere.
We can produce graphics that can make your exhibition stand out from the rest. When designing your display stand, we suggest going for maximum impact with eye-catching images or a large background on the layout of your pop up stand. We recommend reducing text down to main key points with your brand, logo and key USP’s (Unique Selling Propositions) like the example above. Avoid design clutter keeping the design crisp, clean and simple.
Pop up stands have become a popular industry favourite and are a great way to create a professional backdrop for an exhibition display. They create a pretty much seamless graphic wall instantly to effectively promote your product or service.
The pop up stand consists of a lightweight frame which expands up to create a skeleton frame. This then holds the graphic or fabric panels in place creating what looks like a continuous seamless graphic display. The appeal of exhibition pop up display stands comes from their portability, ease of assembly and great value for money. They can be assembled in minutes and can be packed down for easy transportation, cutting down on transportation costs. Basically they can be used virtually anywhere. They are ideal for use at exhibitions, conferences, farmers markets, trade shows, sales meetings, reception areas, summer fetes, training events, retail outlets ... literally in any area where you want to promote your brand. Pop up stands are highly portable and can be packed away with ease. By attaching integrated accessories such as literature holders like the example above they can be your one simple answer for all your exhibition needs.
Do try and inject your personality into your ads, especially if you are a small business. When doing talks to groups of small business owners or working with them on their marketing, I tell them everything we do in business is marketing. Everything from how we answer the phone, to dealing with slow payers, to how we treat future and existing clients. Marketing is about more than attracting new customers to do business with us. It’s also about keeping, nurturing, and “wowing” the ones we have so they buy from us again and again and sing our praises to everyone they know.
Don’t knock your competition. It usually serves to publicise them rather than you. It may win attention, but the likelihood is that it won’t win sales.
Don’t ask the publication to do the advert for you. Remember, they are publishers, not advert designers.
Do try and look at your advert from every angle before publishing ... even upside down!
Don’t worry to much if you feel your product is mundane. Design is the process by which you have the opportunity to transform a mundane product or service into something more rewarding and more memorable. Try to assess each element of your service or product and better it. Design is not just an element of marketing, but a genuine source of competitive advantage, customer and employee satisfaction and loyalty and finally a route to higher profits. So put design at the heart of your company.
In the world of brochure design, clients demand creative and memorable results delivered under budget and on time. The Artworks have an impressive collection of the most innovative and exciting brochure designs from small to medium size businesses and blue chip corporations. The small selection shown here highlights an array of firms who have used the Artworks to push the creative envelope. We turn brochure design challenges into sales opportunities whether that be via a simple 4 page brochure to a full 48 page and beyond product catalogue.
Designing corporate logos is the bedrock of any graphic design business. We’ve embedded quite a few ingenious examples throughout the various pages of this site. Enjoy!
Do accentuate the positive or indeed the negative. Find out what’s right about your product or service and then dramatise it, like a cartoonist exaggerates an action. For example, in the dry cleaning advert above you’d expect to see crisp white clean clothing, but why not also black? This realisation accelerated my creative thinking process faster than anything I have learnt since leaving art college. Providing there is a basic truth in the idea, you can dramatise it to infinity.
Don’t promise what you can’t deliver in your ad. When selling a product or service, we tend to over-promise in our enthusiasm for attention and an immediate sale. No one will say anything, they just won’t trust you quite as much next time. Basically you’ve blown it. If instead you undersell, pointing out the possible weaknesses and how to resolve them, should they occur, you are not only building a trusting relationship with your potential purchaser but you’re able to solve any problems. And if it does turn out the way you hope, it is a bonus.
Don’t concentrate on too many ideas at a time. Some people have a gift for coming up with ideas. But for those that don’t it is a real struggle. Oddly, the people who struggle most are often the ones who become the most successful. Having too many ideas is not always a good thing. It’s too easy to move on to the next one, and the next one. If you don’t have many ideas, you have to make those you do have work for you.
Do check your telephone number is correct ... can’t believe it’s taken until the letter “F” to mention this.
Don’t stray from your corporate colours. For examples of why, simply look up Benson & Hedges gold adverts on the internet. These adverts really did set the benchmark for reinforcing corporate colours in cigarette advertising in the 1970’s and because of their success were duly copied by every other cigarette manufacturer, for example Silk Cut -purple, JPS - black etc.
